Description

United States Lines: Here is a rare six-panel brochure from the late 1970s promoting the "United States Cruising Society".
For an unspecified amount, members could become "part of an elite group of individuals committed to putting the S.S. UNITED STATES, the greatest ship every built, back on the high seas." Your membership entitled you to discounts on cruises until 1999. This was developer Richard Hadley's vision for the ship he bought in 1979. His goal was converted the UNITED STATES into the American version of the FRANCE/NORWAY. He didn't succeed.
Inside the brochure there is a long starboard profile of the ship done up in her proposed new livery. For those used to the ship in her dark North Atlantic colors it is a shocker - all white except for a belt line of blue and red stripes plus a couple of color swooshes added to the funnels for good measure. I once owned Nikes sneakers in the same color combo. Near the bow is a familiar eagle logo that looks lifted from a U.S. Postal Service truck. Not the best organization to emulate.
A montage of cruise photos line the top. All are stock photography except for three. They show the same cabin mock-up from different vantage points. Hadley used one of the suites onboard. Notice the original SSUS furnishing including bureaus, cabinets, and a round glass-topped table used only in suites aboard the UNITED STATES.
Excellent condition.
