Bernie Carbo who is a former outfielder and designated hitter played in MLB for 12 seasons. Bernie was a breakout star for the Cincinnati Reds as a rookie in 1970 batting .310 and 21 home runs (in only 125 games) and he helped the Reds to the 1970 World Series. He was selected as the Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News that season. He became an immortal in Boston in 1976 when playing for the Red Sox against Cincinnati, Bernie hit a 3-run game-tying home run with two outs in the 8th inning of Game #6 of the World Series. The Red Sox went on to win Game #6 on Carlton Fisk's famous home run in the 12th inning. Bernie's hit home run in the 8th is considered probably the greatest pinch hit in the history of the Red Sox. Bernie played several more years in Boston and then went on to play for numerous other teams in his 12-year career. He was a career .264 hitter, but he will always be best remembered for his '76 World Series play. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004.
