FYI:
The 246 foot long steamship
Princess Anne
was built in 1932 for the Virginia Ferry Corporation
at a cost of more than 0,000
. She was used
between Cape Charles and Little Creek;
served on this 26 ½ mile Chesapeake Bay crossing until 1964 when she was sold to state of Delaware
for service between Cape May, N.J. and Lewis, Del.
The
Princess Anne
was renamed
New Jersey
and served on the 16 mile crossing between Cape May, NJ and Lewes, DE.
She could carry 1200 passengers and 124 cars.
This service began on July 1, 1964, utilizing a fleet of four ships operating under a 24 hour schedule.
That schedule was cut back in 1975 to 16 hours a day. The ss
New Jersey
was replaced in 1974.
